ERBIL — One Kurdish Peshmerga was killed on Sunday after a landmine exploded under his feet, an official confirmed.

Introduced by his first initials only, the victim, 41, was reportedly on duty in mountainous areas of Koya district when he stepped on a landmine.

“S. R. had lost both legs and scummed to his injuries before reaching the hospital,” said Koya chief of police Shorsh Kaka.

Thousands of square kilometres of Kurdistan territories are still covered with landmines from the Iran-Iraq war era when Baath regime carpeted the border strip as a defensive plan.
